Architectural Historic Restoration of the Cotton Exchange Building

Preserving a Legacy: The Cotton Exchange Building (Court Plaza Building)

The historic Cotton Exchange Building, now known as the Court Plaza Building, stands as a testament to Oklahoma City’s rich architectural and economic history. Originally constructed in 1925, this landmark played a pivotal role in the region’s cotton trade before transitioning through various phases of ownership and function.

A Storied Past: The building was first established as the Cotton Exchange, serving as a crucial hub for the thriving cotton industry in the early 20th century. In 1928, recognizing the need for expansion, additional structures were integrated into the original design, enhancing its prominence in Oklahoma City’s commercial landscape. As commerce evolved, the building was purchased by the Leonhardt Lumber Company in 1946, marking a new era in its use.

Architectural Significance: A striking example of early 20th-century commercial architecture, the Cotton Exchange Building features a blend of Classical Revival and early Art Deco influences. Its enduring brickwork, decorative cornices, and expansive windows reflect the craftsmanship of its time. The expansion in 1928 further reinforced its stature, maintaining architectural harmony while accommodating increased business needs.

The Restoration Project: The ongoing restoration efforts aim to honor and preserve the building’s historical integrity while adapting it for modern use. Through meticulous craftsmanship, original architectural details are being revived, ensuring the structure remains a cornerstone of downtown Oklahoma City. The restoration includes façade rehabilitation, interior refurbishments, and structural reinforcements to sustain the building’s legacy for generations to come.

A Future Rooted in History: With its restoration, the Court Plaza Building continues to stand as a bridge between past and present, embodying Oklahoma City’s economic and architectural evolution. By preserving this landmark, the city celebrates its heritage while paving the way for a dynamic future.
